The Adventure Begins!
You’ll be picked up early this morning in Launceston from one of two pick-up locations (6:45 – 7 am). After a 2.5-hour drive to Waldheim, the trek begins! The morning is spent walking past lakes and tarns to the Cradle Plateau, offering uninterrupted views of Cradle Mountain. Then, trek across the plateau to Waterfall Valley for the first night under the stars.

Waterfall Valley to Lake Windermere
After breakfast at the campsite, continue south to Lake Windermere. This leisurely day includes a side trip to Lake Will for a relaxing lunch and swim. After returning to the packs, head across buttongrass plains to the stunning campsite, enjoying the views and perhaps another swim.

Lake Windermere to Pelion Plains
Today trek through moorlands and enjoy mountain views. Walk across Pine Forest Moor, with views of the Forth River Valley and Mt Oakleigh. Descend around Mount Pelion West to Frog Flats for lunch, then ascend through tall forest to Pelion Plains. A short side trip to Old Pelion Hut offers a deeper appreciation of the park’s history.

Pelion Plains to Kia Ora
From camp, walk south through Myrtle forest and Pandani trees to the saddle between Mount Pelion East and Mount Ossa. In fine weather, climb Mount Ossa, Tasmania’s highest peak, for magnificent views. Continue south into Pinestone Valley to the creek-side campsite overlooking Cathedral Mountain.

Kia Ora to Bert Nichols
Today’s trek takes you through rainforests of Leatherwood and Sassafrass trees to three of Tasmania’s largest waterfalls: Fergusson Falls, Dalton Falls, and Hartnett Falls. After visiting the falls, ascend Du Cane Gap and descend to the campsite at Bert Nichols.

Bert Nichols to Lake St Clair and Return to Launceston
Pack the backpacks for the final day, trekking through mixed eucalyptus and temperate rainforest to Lake St Clair, the deepest natural lake in the Southern Hemisphere! After a 30-minute ferry ride across the lake, explore the visitor centre and enjoy a celebratory lunch. Then board the bus for the return drive to Launceston, arriving at approximately 5pm where the adventure concludes.

How hard is the Overland Track Trek?

We rate the difficulty of this tour as a 4 / 5. This trip involves trekking for up to six or seven hours a day. The terrain is rugged and remote. Tracks may be long, rough and steep. Over the trip you will walk along boardwalks, up and down steps, through overgrown forests, over tree roots and through muddy sections. This trek should not be underestimated as it can be tough and challenging. You will need a good level of fitness and must be in good health.

Do I need a visa to travel to Australia?

What should I carry with me during the trek?

For your expedition you will need to carry all equipment in a full trekking backpack that is 75‑90litres in capacity. Depending on the quantity of personal gear and toiletries the average pack weight will be between 15‑17kg. This will need to include the following items:

  • Sleeping bag
  • Inflatable mat
  • Portion of the shared tent
  • Portion of the group food
  • All personal items that you decide to bring along
  • All wet weather gear
