The 10Adventures Origin Story
At 10Adventures, our vision is rooted in the belief that adventure is for everyone, from first time cyclists to experienced trekking enthusiasts. But how did we get here? Our story begins with Richard Campbell, a Harvard Business School alum and former consultant turned world traveller, whose passion for cycling, skiing and hiking has always been his compass.
The Moulding of a Traveller
Growing up, Richard spent summers camping and hiking in the Canadian Rockies with his parents. Though he may have been a somewhat reluctant participant at times, these early experiences highlighted the value of spending meaningful time outdoors and planted seeds of wanderlust. In 1999, a post-university trip to Europe transformed into an unexpected odyssey when Richard fell in love with the Alps. From Chamonix to the Engadine, he discovered the incredible freedom of traversing landscapes on foot—a passion that would forever change his life.
Lessons Learned
Richard’s adventures took him through the Pyrenees, Alps, Andes, Himalayas, and even to the bustling streets of Buenos Aires, where exploring on foot became a new form of expression. But not every trip went as expected, as one experience in the Andes highlighted the importance of trust and reliability in travel. When a ‘highly recommended’ guide abandoned his group at 4,500m and later returned to demand valuables, Richard realized travelers shouldn’t have to question the legitimacy of the companies they book with.
His honeymoon hiking in Morocco further emphasized this. With no guide waiting at the airport and fears of a non-existent tour operator and a ruined honeymoon, Richard understood the need for a trusted platform that offered peace of mind to adventurers just like him.
The Birth of 10Adventures
With decades of travel experience in hand, Richard founded 10Adventures in 2016, initially offering free trail guides to the world’s most beautiful hikes. It quickly became apparent that there was a deeper need for a trusted travel platform that didn’t just provide information on how to travel, but crafted unforgettable journeys that connected travelers with nature, culture, and people.
Today, 10Adventures offers over 1,200 tours in 85+ countries, focusing largely on self-guided experiences that promote personal growth and put travellers in control of their own adventure. From the rugged trails of Patagonia to the serene vistas of Tuscany, every experience is carefully curated to ensure reliability and the freedom to explore the world as each traveller sees fit – two factors that Richard believes are just as important now as they were during his travelling years.
