Route Description for The Watchman Trail

The Watchman trail is a moderate hike up to a fantastic viewpoint that looks across the valley floor to Watchman mountain. This hike is well-travelled and straightforward. The grade makes it a reasonable challenge for families with kids. The Watchman Hike has little-to-no shade, so bring lots of water and sunscreen. We recommend doing this hike in the early evening to combat the heat and to get epic sunset views of the valley below.

The Watchman trail is very well maintained and is a heavily trafficked trail. This makes it a good option for families or solo hikers. Those who hike the Watchman often report seeing bighorn sheep and other wildlife along their way. The views across the valley towards Watchman summit are second to none and make the hike totally worth it.

To get to the watchman outlook, start at the Zion Visitor Center, just off of route 9. You will find signage for the trailhead on the east bank of the Virgin River just off the parking lot. Follow the trail eastward along the river and past the Park employee housing. Gradually, the trail will become hilly and more difficult as you begin to ascend. After about a mile of heading upwards, the trail will switch on itself and turn westward.

Approximately 0.5 km after the switchback, you will reach a divide in the trail: this is the Watchman viewpoint. The viewpoint itself has been turned into a short, quarter-mile loop so that hikers can get a 360-scope of the valley below. To the south, you will get a stunning view of Watchman mountain. To the northeast: Bridge Mountain is visible above the ridgeline, and to the southwest, the viewpoint overlooks the town of Springdale.

If it’s not too scorching, the viewpoint is a great place to enjoy lunch, or if you are hiking in the early evening, be sure to stick around to watch the sunset.
