We love a rugged adventure, and the Old Big Oak Flat Access Road Hike delivers just that. If you don’t mind some light scrambling and the thrill of vertigo-inducing views, then you will love this hike. Note: this trek presents inherent dangers, as rockfalls are not uncommon along this route. Stay off the trail after rainfall, use your judgment, and exercise caution. Additionally, make sure to wear sturdy footwear, pack plenty of water, and don’t forget to charge your camera, as the views are epic! Setting out from the trailhead, the Old Big Oak Flat Access Road Hike follows the Valley Loop Trail northeast to an intersection. Take a sharp left and follow the trail northwest over Ribbon Creek to make your way onto the Old Big Oak Flat Road. Follow the tree-lined path and do your best to mind your footing, as the drop-off is quite dramatic. Have fun scrambling over the rockslides and the fallen trees, before eventually arriving at a switchback. Shortly after this is where we turned around, though you can continue hiking further if you wish!
To get back to the trailhead, simply head back the way you came. As you wander east on the return to the trailhead, you will be granted jaw-dropping views of El Capitan towering above. Admire the grandeur of the rock and keep an eye out for any daring climbers scaling the sheer rock face.
