Route Description for Smardale Gill Walk
Passing through a wonderfully scenic dale just outside of Yorkshire Dales National Park, the Smardale Gill Walk is an exceptional journey that will take you on a fun figure-eight route, truly allowing you to experience the relaxation and natural beauty of the countryside.
Setting out from the trailhead, you will make your way across Scandal Beck and traverse the open fields to the north, taking in the lovely views of the surrounding farmland before once again crossing over the beck. Following along its west bank, you will eventually traverse the Smardale Gill Viaduct that offers beautiful views of the dale and surrounding hills.
From here, the trail will lead you through a peaceful stretch of woodland terrain on the approach to the village of Smardale. Once there, you will head southwest across the beautiful moorland terrain, crossing over Scandal Beck once again at the same crossing that you had previously used. Continue heading to the south along the edge of the water, soaking up some final views across the dale as you work your way back to the trailhead in Ravenstonedale.
