While out on the trail, you will climb uphill across the rugged terrain of the moor for some stunning views overlooking the park and pass by the Rylstone Cross - which some say commemorates the Peace of Paris, although it isn’t exactly clear which one - and the Cracoe Obelisk that honours the local fallen soldiers during both World Wars. This is a great route for nature and history lovers alike.

Route Description for Rylstone Cross and Cracoe Obelisk Walk

As mentioned above, the Rylstone Cross and Cracoe Obelisk Walk is a great adventure for anyone that enjoys local history and stunning views of nature. Located within the Yorkshire Dales, the two historical monuments along the route allow walkers to connect with the history of the region. The first of the two - the Rylstone Cross - is believed to commemorate the Peace of Paris; however, as there have been several treaties of the same name and little evidence exist surrounding the monument, it is difficult to discern which is correct. The second - the Cracoe Obelisk - was originally built after the First World War to commemorate the local fallen soldiers; however, this was later expanded to include those soldiers from the Second World War as well.

In addition to these fascinating historical sites, this route features some breathtaking views of the surrounding moorland terrain of the Yorkshire Dales, as well as the charming villages and small lakes that can be found nearby. It truly is a wonderful route that caters to a variety of walking enthusiasts.

Setting out from Rylstone, you will initially follow the road to the northeast before turning to the southeast to climb up the steep slopes of Sun Moor Hill. From here, you will traverse the moor and climb gradually uphill to the northeast to visit the aforementioned monuments. After reaching the northeastern corner of the route near Thorpe Fell Top, you will descend the hillside towards Cracoe, turning back to the southwest on the return to the trailhead.
