Route Description for Mount Hunter Lookout Trail
The Mount Hunter Lookout Trail is a fantastic way to spend a half day outdoors exploring the natural beauty of Yoho National Park; however, the trail is not without its downfalls. Initial stretches of the route are slightly overgrown with brush, although they eventually do open up to a more well-travelled path to the lookout. Other hikers have reported being bitten by ticks along this initial stretch, so exercise caution and be sure to check yourself for bites following this hike. Additionally, the route leading up to the lookout is steep and fairly relentless, so be sure to bring plenty of water on hotter days to avoid exhaustion.
While there may be some challenging aspects to this adventure, that is all part of the fun, and the breathtakingly scenic views from the lookout will be more than an ample reward for your efforts. The trail sets out from the side of the road and treks through a thick scratch of overgrown forest before crossing over a rail line. Here, the trail will open up a bit into a more well-travelled path. Continuing uphill along the steep slopes of the mountain, you will pass several stunning lookouts over the valley and surrounding mountain before arriving at the final lookout. Here, you will experience breathtaking views of several majestic peaks across the valley to the southwest, including Kapristo Mountain, Bicarbonate Peak, and Coral Mountain. After taking in the views, turn back and carefully retrace your steps down the mountainside to return to the trailhead.
