Route Description for Specimen Ridge and Amethyst Mountain Trail
The Specimen Ridge and Amethyst Mountain Trail is a beautiful hike in Yellowstone. This trail does not get a ton of traffic and can be a great place to escape the crowds. Wildlife, including elk, bison, and pronghorn, are often seen along this trail. Before you set out on your hike, make sure that everyone in your hiking party is familiar with bear safety protocols. At least one member of your group should carry bear spray and know how to use it properly. If you do encounter wild animals, do not approach or feed them and be sure to admire them from a safe distance.
Beginning at the Specimen Ridge Trailhead, follow the trail and stay left at the first two divides. Continue southeast along the trail for about a mile past the second divide to an overlook. Rest here and enjoy the views before turning back and retracing your steps back to the trailhead.
