Route Description for Monument Peak Loop
The Monument Peak Loop is a diverse, ever-changing quick trip near Payson, Arizona. This 5.5 km hike loops a small peak, offering a trail that takes you through a shady pine forest to peekaboo lookouts over the surrounding mountains. It’s an easy hike, making this a good choice for all skill levels. Be prepared to share the trail with equestrians, ATVs, and mountain bikers.
Although this route offers a nice bit of shade, you’ll want to prepare appropriately if you plan to hike in the summertime. Bring lots of water and consider sun protection like a hat and sunscreen. If it’s rained recently, be prepared to need to cross some water as there are washes on this route.
From the trailhead, you can begin the loop either to the left or right. Most hikers go counterclockwise, keeping right at the start. You’ll hike through the trees away from the peak before turning west and crossing by the north end of the peak. You’ll curve to the south and then hike between the forest road and Monument Peak back to the trailhead.
