Route Description for Cypress-Stewart Ridge Extended Loop
The Cypress-Stewart Ridge is a bit of an underrated adventure, and it’s very easy to get to from Payson. This hike has tons of varied, gorgeous scenery. It’s easy enough for strong beginners, and it’s enjoyable for most of the year as long as you prepare accordingly for the weather.
The trail can be very easy to lose, so a downloaded map is a must. It’s not well-signed at all, so zoom in on that GPS route and make sure you’re checking it often to stay on the right track. There are so many side trails that navigation can be a real challenge. Additionally, there are bears in the area and some users report seeing scat on this route, so we recommend hiking in groups or bringing bear spray.
From the trailhead, follow the sign that says Non-Motorized Traffic Only. As you hike, keep one eye on your navigation and another on the lovely views. We especially enjoy this route when the cacti are blooming. Watch for mountain bike traffic as you go, but you’ll likely enjoy a pretty quiet trip.
