Route Description for Alamo Canyon via Picketpost and Arizona Trail
Back in the late 1800s, General George Stoneman and his troops chose the base of Picketpost Mountain as the site of their camp. They sought to seize the land from the native Yavapai and planned to use the butte as a natural barrier. The mountain was given its current nickname by these troops. This hike travels underneath Picketpost Mountain into Alamo Canyon.
The route begins at the Picketpost Trailhead. You’ll follow the Arizona Trail, which runs through the whole state from top to bottom, for the first 0.3 km. Stay left where the route that heads up to the summit of the mountain splits off.
Continue along the canyon, hiking just above the wash. The elevation gain is very spread-out, so enjoy meandering along the canyon. This area was recently affected by a fire, so the vegetation and scenery will change every year as the area recovers. At the end of the route, turn around and retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
