Route Description for Cox Bay Lookout
The Cox Bay Lookout is a short climb to one of the best viewpoints in the entire Tofino area. Although the route is fairly short at 1.0 km, it is also steep and requires some minor scrambling to cross the root-covered terrain that is almost constantly blanketed in mud. Bring hiking footwear to better traverse this technical trail. Additionally, make sure to time this hike for low tide for the most likely chance of finding the slightly hidden trailhead.
Setting out from the parking lot next to the Surf Grove Campground, hikers will need to make their way down to Cox Bay Beach to find the trailhead. Head west down Sakurai Lane and follow it all the way down to the beach. Once there, follow the shoreline to the southwest until the beach turns into a forested area. From here, you will need to use some amateur route-finding skills to search for the trail leading uphill through the trees.
Once you locate the trail, chart a course for the highest part of the hill and begin your climb up the rocky, root-covered terrain. After working your way uphill, you will eventually come to a small clearing among the trees, where you can sit and admire the beautifully scenic coastal landscape. Far in the distance to the north, you will be able to spot the islands of Clayoquot Sound and, to the west, the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. After taking in the views, carefully climb back down the hill to return to Cox Bay Beach.
