Route Description for Llyn Geirionydd
Llyn Geirionydd is a little tricky to find, with only narrow side roads providing access to its shores. Once you’re there, it’s a lovely area to explore, with smooth easy paths that the whole family can enjoy.
With free parking, picnic areas, toilets, and even baby changing facilities, Llyn Geirionydd is the perfect place to bring the family for a casual outing. The Gwydyr Forest envelopes the lake in an idyllic atmosphere, while views of the Carneddau mountains to the west are simply spectacular.
From the car park, you can set off in either direction around the lake. The best route is a counter-clockwise direction, turning right from the car park and heading north. The trail is wide and waymarked all the way through. On this eastern side of the lake, it’s a broad country lane; on the western side, a public footpath.
At the north end of the lake, cross over the River Geirionydd and turn left to make your way back south along its opposite shore. The elevation on this side is more pronounced, so if you (or the kids) fancy a clamber through the woods, this is the spot for it! Otherwise, stroll along the footpath as it leads you back to the southern end of the lake. Turn left, then left again, and you’re back at the car park.
Insider Hints for Llyn Geirionydd
- There are lots of little additions you can make to the walk for a longer journey. A loop just southeast of the lake itself provides a bit of extra elevation. You can also make your way west to neighbouring Llyn Crafnant - paths are available at both the north and south ends of Llyn Geirionydd.
- For an even longer walk, set off right from the village of Trefriw, a little over 2.0mi north of the lake.
