Route Description for Horse Camp Trail
Explore the second highest peak in the Cascade Range along the Horse Camp Trail. This epic expedition wanders through subalpine forests and montane meadows up to the historic site and campground. Treat yourself to jaw-dropping views of the potentially active volcano from the safety of Horse Camp. This route is accessible year-round, but winter expeditions require a pair of snowshoes or crampons. Note dogs are not permitted.
Embark on your adventure along the Horse Camp Hike from the trailhead off Everitt Memorial Highway. Setting out from here, you will be led north through a mixed-coniferous forest. Admire the scene of the towering moss-ringed pines and the sights of Mount Shasta looming above. As you climb, be sure to mind your footing on the rocky and uneven terrain. Eventually, the path will divert you northeast up Avalanche Gulch to Horse Camp.
Explore the grounds and the Sierra Club Horse Camp. Appreciate the beauty of the encompassing landscape, and when you are through admiring the scenery, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
