Schuerman Mountain is an easy objective for hikers in Sedona, offering views from Airport Mesa to Cathedral Rock on a 1.7mi trail. There’s also an extension available if you want a different vantage point from the top. This route is easy enough for families and beginners and, besides a short steep section, there are no major challenges. Expect moderate traffic on this route.

Route Description for Schuerman Mountain Lookout Hike

Schuerman Mountain provides a great view of Airport Mesa and Cathedral Rock with the ease of an easy-moderate trail. Besides a bit of a climb in the first 15 minutes or so, the trail is quite relaxed and easy enough for beginners and kids.

From the trailhead, hike south a few steps alongside the road, then take a right past the intersecting trail to Schuerman Mountain Trail. You’ll gain most of the elevation for the hike after this point, climbing up the side of Schuerman. Take a break to look back at the views if you need a breather.

Once you crest the top, stay left towards the lookout. Admire the view, and then head back to the junction. If you want to actually reach the highest point, there’s a trail straight ahead that takes you there. Otherwise, you can head back down the mountain on the same path you used to get up.

  • There is an extension available that takes you along the other side of the summit to a valley viewpoint. Users report that the view isn’t a must, but if you want to take it, it adds 1.9mi to your total distance.
