Route Description for Missouri and Fancy Lakes Loop Trail
The Missouri and Fancy Lakes Loop Hike is a must-do the next time you find yourself near the Mount of the Holy Cross Wilderness. If you are seeking a diversion from the quintessential summit adventures, then this hike is the perfect option. Still revealing epic mountain vistas, this route also exhibits the beauty of the woodlands, the alpine tundra, and the glittering lakes without having to over-exhaust yourself. Though you can venture this trail year-round with the help of trekking poles and microspikes or snowshoes, but it is worth noting that the road to the trailhead is subject to seasonal winter closures.
Begin your journey along the Missouri and Fancy Lakes Loop Trail from the Missouri Lakes/Fancy Pass Trailhead. From here, the circuit can be completed from either direction, but we prefer to track counterclockwise. Keep right and hike along the Fancy Pass Trail, following along the curves of the babbling waters of Fancy Creek. Trekking northwest, you will eventually come to an intersection and keep left to be guided to the shores of Fancy Lake. Take some time to revel in the emerald hue of the waters and the sights of the flanking craggy cliffs. Once you are done enjoying the view, continue along the path and climb over Fancy Pass to reach another junction.
At this point, you will want to turn left onto the Missouri Lakes Trail. Now wandering southeast, you will once again summit the mountain pass before dipping into the basin which is littered with the Missouri Lakes. Notice Savage Peak in the south and continue trekking along this route, following along Missouri Creek as the path guides you all the way back to the trailhead, marking the end of your adventure.
