Route Description for Presidio Ecology Trail
This beautiful trail in Presidio Park boasts a magical experience for hikers of all skill levels and ages. Located near the city’s center, the Presidio Ecology Hike is well revered, so come prepared to share the trail. Those seeking a quieter experience are encouraged to head out in the early morning to beat the crowds. Additionally, due to this path’s proximity to the coast, you can expect windy and foggy conditions—so best dress in layers. Though not necessary, the trail GPS may prove helpful as several intersections are poorly signposted.
Embark on your adventure along the Presidio Ecology Hike from the trailhead off Arguello Blvd. Setting out from the Ecology Trailhead, hikers will be guided east down to an intersection. Here, veer left onto the Ecology Trail (Upper) over to Inspiration Point, which boasts epic views of Alcatraz in the distance. Follow this path to the trail’s end. Here, backtrack and merge onto Barnard Avenue through Pop Hicks Field. Merge onto the Ecology Trail (Lower), then turn left onto the Connector Trail and right onto El Polin Loop.
Following your completion of the loop, retrace your footing up the steps to the junction. Take the middle route, climbing up to the Ecology Trail (Upper). At this point, turn left and retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
