Route Description for Ecology Trail and Lovers’ Lane Loop
Indulge in the beauty of the Bay Area’s native flora and fauna along the Ecology Trail and Lovers’ Lane Loop. Hike amongst towering redwoods, oaks, eucalyptus, Monterey pine, Monterey cypress, and watch hummingbirds and butterflies dance above. This excellent nature trail boasts a memorable experience for hikers of all skill levels and ages. Get outside and reconnect with nature while getting a wonderful workout in. Note this route is highly frequented, though early mornings are often more tranquil.
Setting out from the parking lot, follow Mesa Street west, turning left onto Moraga Ave and right onto Funston Ave. Here you will find the trailhead for the Ecology Trail (Upper), which will guide you into the woodlands, gradually progressing at an incline. Enjoy the scene of the lush vegetation and the views of the Bay Area through the tree breaks. At the route’s end, merge onto the Ecology Trail (Lower), keeping right at the following junction. Follow this path eastwardly, ultimately reaching an intersection with Lover’s Lane.
Veer left onto this trail and wander through the corridor of looming trees. Marvel at the beauty of the lane and snap a few photos before opening to MacArthur Meadow. Meander southwest along the meadow and over Barnard Ave onto Funston Ave. From here, retrace your footing back to the parking lot.
