Route Description for Broad Canyon Trail #61

The Broad Canyon Trail #61 will test you mentally and physically, but it is made way more bearable and enjoyable with the spellbinding mountain views along the way. Explore Copper Basin as you wander through the Broad Canyon and revel in the diversity of flora and fauna that occupy this alpine environment. Note that much of this hike is unshaded, so make sure you check the forecast, dress in layers, and come prepared to brave the elements. Additionally, it is important to be mindful of inclement weather.

Setting out from the trailhead, your adventure into Broad Canyon heads southwestwardly. Climbing through sagebrush and into the alpine meadows that are often occupied with grazing elk. Enjoy the phenomenal views of the Pioneer Mountains that bound the valley, rising from the lush landscape. After some hiking, you will enter into a corridor lined with alpine firs. As the canyon narrows, the terrain will become increasingly exposed and rocky. Eventually, you will confront an intersection; turn right here onto Broad Canyon Trail #64. This route will steeply climb to Betty Lake, briefly merging onto the Jarvis Trail. Enjoy the scenes of the blue-hued pool, then reconnect with the Broad Canyon Trail #61 down to Goat Lake.

Marvel in the dramatic landscape, including the vertiginous walls of Standhope Peak looming above and Pyramid Peak in the northeast. Beyond this point, you will pass by Baptie Lake before again confronting the trail junction. From here, retrace your steps along the Broad Canyon Trail #61 through the valley and back to the trailhead.
