Escape into the Colorado wilderness as you trek the Shadow Mountain via East Shore Trail. With views of lakes, mountains, through lush woodlands and up to a historic site. This hike is a great way to get acclimated to the elevation of the Colorado high country while enjoying gorgeous scenery along the way. Located within the Rocky Mountain National Park, visitors are required to purchase a park pass.
Embark on your adventure along the Shadow Mountain via East Shore Hike from the trailhead. From here, track north along the East Shore Trail and over the Colorado River. Hike along the shore of Shadow Mountain Lake, and eventually you will encounter a junction. Here, veer right and you will be diverted onto the Shadow Mountain Lookout Trail. Ascend the forested route and enjoy mountainous views peeking through tree breaks. Navigate the switchbacks up to the summit and fire lookout.
Explore the historic fire overlook and revel in the expansive views of the Never Summer Mountains and Front Range peaks. Imagine the rangers who used to sit atop the summit and keep eye over the verdant wilderness. To get back to the trailhead, simply retrace your steps all the way back.
