Route Description for Lily Lake Trail
The Lily Lake Trail has been awarded one of the most scenic adventures in the Rocky Mountain National Park, and if you trek this route, then you will understand why. Because of its natural beauty, the Lily Lake Trail is highly trafficked. If you are seeking a secluded hike away from the crowds, then the Lily Lake Trail is not your best option. The incredibly panoramic views make up for the crowds, and the earlier you arrive, the quieter the hike will likely be. It is also worth noting that parking is limited, so arrive early and carpool, when possible, to secure a spot! Located within the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), visitors are required to purchase a pass.
This incredibly charming excursion reveals sweeping views of the encompassing craggy peaks. Revel in sights of the Twin Sisters Peak, Mount Meeker and even Longs Peak as you track around the loop. The scenery is unparalleled, which is why there are often wedding parties snapping photos along the boardwalk! Not only is the Lily Lake Trail postcard worthy, but it is also accessible to adventurers of all skill levels and capabilities. The well maintained, level gravel path is manageable for those with wheelchairs and strollers! The Lily Lake Hike is an epic family-friendly expedition to add to your RMNP adventure bucket list.
The Lily Lake Trail can be completed from either direction, but we prefer to hike this one clockwise. From the Lily Lake Trailhead, veer left along the Lily Lake Trail. Hike along the east side of the lake through wetlands before the path curves you north. Traverse the gravel route and keep an eye out for ducks along the shoreline. Enjoy the uninterrupted views of Lily Lake on the right, and vistas of Estes Cone, Mount Meeker and Longs Peak on your left. Continue hiking the south shoreline and at the junction, veer right.
From the junction you will begin to trek northeast along the west side of Lily Lake. From the west shoreline, there are plenty of trail extensions. Ignore the merging paths or if you are seeking a longer hike, venture one of the many off-shooting paths. Soon the route will begin to curve you southeast. The north side of the lake will reward you with another perspective of Longs Peak and breathtaking views of the Twin Sisters Peaks. Follow the north shoreline all the way back to the trailhead. This is your journey’s end. Have a picnic at one of the many picnic tables to enjoy the scenery for a little bit longer.
