Route Description for Prairie Creek and Foothill Loop
Seeking an easy-going adventure in the Redwoods National and State Parks? The Prairie Creek and Foothill Loop is a relaxing nature walk that the whole family can enjoy. Explore the prolific redwood groves and revel in the grandeur of the “Big Tree”. This magical experience is a crowd favorite, so you will likely have to share the trail! If you are seeking a more secluded experience, then we encourage you to head out in the early morning to beat the traffic!
Setting out from the Prairie Creek Trailhead, the Prairie Creek and Foothill Loop follows the Prairie Creek Trail northeastwardly, deep into the primeval grove. This path will intersect with beautiful creeks on three occasions before redirecting you east, over the Parkway. At this point, you will want to turn right onto the Foothill Trail, which will guide you south to “Big Tree”. Revel in the grandeur of the ancient redwood, then continue south along the trail.
At the route’s end, turn right onto the Cathedral Trees Trail, which will lead you west, back over the Parkway, and ultimately return you to the trailhead.
