Route Description for L.V. Yates Loop
The L.V. Yates Loop leads you around a scenic corner of the Sonoran Desert in Phoenix. This hike is easy and only requires a short stint of uphill hiking, but the challenge lies in the navigation. The first section of the hike is easy enough to follow, but with lots of junctions, it can become confusing. Have a GPS route on hand to keep you heading in the right direction.
There is no shade on this hike, so bring lots of water and try to time your visit for the cooler parts of the day. Watch out for mountain bike traffic sharing this trail.
From the trailhead, head across Tatum Wash on the trail furthest to your left. At the fork, stay left onto Quartz Ridge Trail #8. Continue on this trail to approach the base of the hill ahead, climbing up the gentle incline and off the other side of the hill, where you’ll immediately stay right.
While you’ll encounter lots of junctions on the way back, you’ll want to follow Tatum Wash back to the trailhead, so watch for this depression and stay with it where you can.
