Route Description for Winnats Pass and Cave Dale Circular Walk
The Winnats Pass and Cave Dale Circular Trail is a popular walking route due to the fairly easy-going terrain, historic sites, and breathtaking views of the Peak District. The trail sets out from the heart of Castleton and heads west to pass Speedwell Cavern on the way through the rugged terrain of the pass. Once through, you will head south to cut across the open farmland terrain, before the trail turns east to descend the tranquil landscape of Cave Dale that is flanked by imposing limestone cliffs. Here, you will have some great sightlines looking onto the historic Peveril Castle, which has stood proudly over the Derbyshire landscape since the 11th Century. Continue making your way through the dale to eventually arrive back in the centre of the village where you began your walk.
