The Bear Basin Grand Traverse Loop is a lovely adventure conveniently located near McCall, Idaho. Beckoning year-round exploration of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts of all sorts, you can expect to be in the company of like-minded people as you wander. As this route is shared with mountain bikers, it is important to be mindful of passers-by and to watch your footing on the rough and rocky terrain. While wildlife encounters are rare along this busy route, it is important to note that they are possible.
The Bear Basin Grand Traverse Loop sets out from the Baby Bear Trailhead, where you will be guided northward along the winding route. Meandering through woodlands interspersed with meadows, you will likely enjoy the sounds of singing birds. After some hiking, you will come to an intersection and take the Grand Traverse Trail further into the wilderness from here. Wander this route through the lush forest until the trail’s end.
At this point, you will take a sharp left turn onto the Westy Trail. The Westy Trail will redirect you southwardly and ultimately back to the Baby Bear Trail intersection. To get back to the trailhead, turn right and retrace your footing along this route back to the trailhead.
