For those looking to get out and experience the fresh mountain air along a tough, but not overly long trail, the Butter Mountain Circular Walk in the Mourne Mountains Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a fantastic option.
Setting out from the car park along the edge of the Spelga Reservoir, you will head to the northeast to begin working your way up the steep slopes of Butter Mountain. After reaching the summit, you will enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscape that includes rugged mountain peaks, sloping valleys, and several reservoirs.
Continuing along the trail, you will make your way downhill to the north, before turning to the southwest along the lower slopes of Spaltha peak. Here, the trail will turn more directly to the south along the slopes of Spelga, bringing you further downhill towards the end point of the walk as you take in the views of the Spelga Reservoir.
