Route Description for Skookum Butte Hike
Explore the stunning sub-alpine terrain along the Skookum Butte Hike. This epic excursion explores a variety of terrains and warrants breathtaking views of Montana’s and Idaho’s mountains from the top of the butte. This steep path is sweat-inducing and exposed to the elements, so make sure you pack enough water for yourself and your pup! Note the trail is poorly marked and has spotty cell service, so we recommend downloading the trail GPS before departure.
Embark on your journey up to an amazing overlook of the mountainous landscape from the trailhead off Pacman Road. Setting out from here, the Skookum Butte Trail traces the state line between Idaho and Montana through an area of limited tree shade before escaping beneath the tree canopy. Using the trail GPS, you will be led westwardly, up the eastern slope of the butte, and ultimately to the summit.
While this is not the most prominent summit in the area, the peak boasts spellbinding views of the forested mountainscape and deep valleys. Revel in the scene's beauty, then retrace your steps back down the path to the trailhead.
