Table of contents

The hike along Twin Sisters Trail to Tumac mountain is a beautiful outing, traversing 7.1mi with 2005ft of elevation gain. This hike is often used as a short backpacking trip, but you can easily complete it in a morning. The climb up Tumac doesn’t pose any special challenges, but be aware: the mosquitoes in this area are absolutely relentless, to the point where we recommend hiking this trail after the first frost if possible. Otherwise, nets and high-potency spray are essential.

Route Description for Twin Sisters Trail and Tumac Mountain

Hike to shimmering aqua lakes and then ascend Tumac Mountain for a bird’s-eye view on this great hike. Twin Sisters Trail and Tumac Mountain can be a fabulous half-day hike, or you can settle in at the campgrounds for a night.

Excellent bug protection is essential on this trail in the midsummer or you may get eaten alive!

Begin by heading south out of Deep Creek Campground, hiking through a couple of wide switchbacks to crest the ridge. Hiking above the creek on the mountainside, it's not too far before you reach the lakes. While the trail skirts one of the shores, there is a trail between them if you want to check out the larger of the two lakes to the west.

Keep heading roughly south past the lake, keeping right where the Sand Ridge Trail intersects. The trail is fairly level until you reach the base of Tumac. The trail up is very straightforward. From the summit, you’ll simply retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
