Route Description for Dirty Harry’s Peak via Birdhouse Trail
Birdhouse Trail is the best way to reach Dirty Harry’s Peak now, as the original trailhead has become very overgrown. Use this route guide to access the peak or use our route guide for Dirty Harry’s Balcony if that’s where you’re headed.
The hike begins from Olallie State Park Far side Trailhead. Walk across the river on the road and turn right onto Dirty Harry’s Peak Trail. Gain elevation as you hike, with spur trails to viewpoints intersecting frequently before the switchbacks (feel free to head down to check them out: the Grit Scone, Overhaul, Sun Vista Slab, Interstate Park, etc.).
The route begins to switchback, and continues to do so to again about 250 m of elevation. After a straighter stretch, the intersection with the side trail to Dirty Harry’s Balcony will be on your right. It’s short and well worth the side trip. Then from here, turn back uphill and gain elevation on a straightforward trail, crossing the creek before a few wide switchbacks to the peak.
From the peak, you’ll retrace your steps back to the trailhead.
