Route Description for The Portal Overlook Trail
The Portal Overlook Trail is a fun route with fantastic views for intermediate or experienced hikers. This trail becomes exposed and vertiginous near the end so woozy hikers beware. This route also gets extremely hot in the afternoon sun, so we recommend doing this hike as early in the morning as possible. This trail is shared by day hikers, dog-walkers, and mountain bikers, so be aware of your surroundings and let faster folks pass you by. The views along this trail are absolutely beautiful, and the low-traffic nature of this route means that you might be lucky enough to be the only one out to enjoy them.
From the parking area, head up the portal trail and immediately take a right to head north. This trail is well marked and well defined and leaves little room to get off-track. 1.9 km in, you will reach a viewpoint overlooking the city of Moab. From this viewpoint, continue along the ridge as the trail curves west for another 1.4 km to a second viewpoint. This overlook, located at a fork in the path, marks the end of the Portal Overlook Trail.
Enjoy a rest at this viewpoint before turning around and following the same path back to the Portal parking area.
