Route Description for Big Horn Overlook Trail
The Big Horn Overlook Trail is an easy, out-and-back hike to a fantastic viewpoint overlooking Shafer Canyon. This trail is kid-friendly, and dog-friendly but there are some steep drop offs alongside the trail so exercise caution when hiking with little ones. Dogs who want to join in on the adventure must be kept on leash for the duration of their hike, and their leash cannot be longer than 6 feet. Make sure you bring lots of water, some snacks, and a camera—you will want to take your time along this trail and soak up the incredible views it has to offer.
From the Visitor Center, follow the trail onto the east side of the highway. Just past the Kayenta Campground the trail will divide. Take the path on the right to head northwest for 1.8 km to the Big Horn Overlook.
Take a rest at the viewpoint and enjoy the stunning views of the canyon below before turning around and following the same trail back to the Visitor Center.
