Route Description for Gridley Trail
Those seeking a demanding day hike near Ojai will enjoy the Gridley Trail. This impressively scenic trail wanders through lush communities of native shrubs, beautiful cacti and past several outcrops. Exhibiting the diversity of the area’s flora, this route also boasts the perfect opportunity to see wildlife, including snakes, lizards, deer, and a condor if you are lucky. Note much of the terrain is exposed, so be sure to pack plenty of water and wear proper sun protection.
Setting out from the trailhead, the Gridley Trail wanders north through a residential area before escaping into the wilderness. Gradually climbing into the Topatopa Mountains, the route will wind up the vertiginous terrain through the arid terrain. Mind your footing as sections of the path are obstructed by outcrops. The higher you ascend, the better the views of the imposing mountains will be. Intersecting with several creeks along the way, you and your pup will have the opportunity to rehydrate—just make sure you filter the water.
You will ultimately reach the trail’s end at the intersection with Nordhoff Road. Marvel in the panorama of the Transverse Mountains, and when you are ready, retrace your steps back down to the trailhead.
