Route Description for Tamarack Lake Hike

Offering views of woodlands, wildflowers, alpine lakes, and the Sierra Nevada peaks, the Tamarack Lake Hike checks all the boxes. Wander along the PCT amongst intrepid backpackers as you make your way to the lakeshore. Be sure to wear comfortable footwear, layers, and sun protection, as much of the path is exposed to the elements. Additionally, if you plan to hike in the winter months, be sure to strap on a pair of snowshoes or microspikes. Note: a free permit can be found at the trailhead and is required to hike this trail.

Embark on your adventure along the Tamarack Lake Hike from the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trailhead at the end of Echo Lakes Road. Setting out from here, the Tamarack Lake Trail heads north past the water taxi pier and up to the Echo Pass Overlook. From here, you will be granted expansive views of the encompassing wilderness, including Lake Tahoe. Continue trekking west along the PCT and follow the shoreline cliffs of Echo Lake. Eventually, you will pass Upper Echo Lake, which is the smaller alpine pool of the two. The trail will climb more intensely from the north side of the lake.

Continue hiking up the PCT to Tamarack Lake. Marvel at the beauty of the alpine terrain and dip your toes in the chilly waters. After ogling the picture-perfect scenery, retrace your footing along the path back to the trailhead.
