Route Description for Tahoe Rim Trail to Twin Crags
The Tahoe Rim Trail to Twin Crags exhibits awesome views of Lake Tahoe and the bounding Sierra Nevada Mountains. Travel up through mixed pine forests before the route opens up to sweeping panoramic views. This hike is great for those needing to acclimatize to the area’s elevation. Open year-round, this route can be enjoyed in the winter months with a pair of snowshoes. Note: parking at the trailhead is limited, so we encourage you to arrive early to secure a spot, especially in the summer months.
Setting out from the trailhead, the Tahoe Rim Trail to Twin Crags follows the Tahoe Rim Trail north. The initial section of the hike is the steepest, but don’t let that discourage you, as it will become less intense. Navigate the switchback up through the mixed forest and enjoy the tree shade as you climb up the heart-pumping terrain. The path will soon redirect you southwest and the route will become more exposed. Marvel in the sweeping panoramas of the high Sierra and continue hiking until you reach the top of the Twin Crags.
Though not usually visible from here, the Twin Crags below is a popular climbing spot. Here, you will be granted wonderful views of the shimmering alpine lake, the snow-capped craggy peaks, and the Truckee River below. Revel in the vistas, before retracing your steps along the path back to the trailhead.
