This lengthy walk will see you traverse a variety of terrain that includes beautiful forests and exposed hilltops, offering lovely views of the surrounding landscape. For those that don’t want to walk the return journey, you can arrange a pick up at the end of the trail or take a boat ride back to Lakeside near the trailhead.

Route Description for Windermere Way Walk: Section 1

The Windermere Way Section 1 is a great long distance route for walkers that are either looking to complete the entire journey around the lake or are simply after a bit of solitude on the trail. This lesser-walked point-to-point route sets out from the Newby Bridge and heads southeast before turning to the north to traverse some intermittent stretches of forest and open terrain that will take you uphill. After traversing the summit of Gummer’s How and enjoying some nice views of Windermere, continue to the northeast and make your way through the undulating Lake District terrain until you arrive at the village of Bowness-on-Windermere. From here, you can catch a ride back to the trailhead, take a boat ride across the lake, or continue along the trail to complete the entire Windermere Way Trail.
