Route Description for McGuire Mountain Trail
The McGuire Mountain Trail is a family-friendly adventure into the Salish Mountains. This epic expedition offers panoramic views of the nearby mountains, the Cabinet Range, and the Kootenai River from the lookout tower. While this trail explores a ponderosa pine forest, the tree canopy is exposed, so it is wise to wear sun protection and to dress in layers and insurance against changing conditions. Note his route explores bear country so make sure to carry a canister of bear spray.
Embark on your adventure from the parking off Homestead Drive. Setting out from here, you will be guided southwest along the contours of Little Sutton Mountain. Soon after your departure from the trailhead, the path will redirect you northeast, gaining a ridge up to the saddle. From here, you will wander along the forested crest towards McGuire Mountain. After some hiking, the path will curve east, climbing up to the peak.
Tour around the summit and explore the charming lookout tower. Revel in the panoramic views of Montana’s mountainscape, then when you are ready, retrace your steps back down to the trailhead.
