Route Description for Kootenai Falls Trail
Discover the beautiful Kootenai Falls that surge down the rock-bound canyon near Troy, Montana. This easy-going trek explores lush woodlands and crosses over a railway down the riverbank. Note this area is well-loved and heavily frequented no matter the season, so expect to share the trails. Those seeking a more tranquil experience are encouraged to head out in the early morning. While this route is manageable for families with younger children and novice hikers, it is worth pointing out that a multi-level staircase demands to be maneuvered to reach the overlook.
Embark on your adventure from the Kootenai Falls Trailhead. Setting out from here, you will be guided east into a swathe of woodlands occupied by pines, cedars, and hemlock. Soon after your departure, the path will redirect you north, gradually descending towards the enclosed bridge over the railway bridge. If you are lucky, you will be able to experience a train running beneath your feet. After crossing the bridge, you will be led down the staircase to an intersection. Here, turn right and hike to the overlook.
Marvel at the scene of the tumbling waterfall that stretches along the entire width of the river. Enjoy the mesmerizing scenery and keep an eye out for eagles perched in the trees along the riverbank. When you are through admiring the view, head back the way you came and grab an ice cream from the Kootenai Falls Store on the way out.
