Route Description for Henry Lake Trail
Explore the Kootenai National Forest's remote and rugged area on the Henry Lake Trail. Short, scenic, and secluded—there is not much more you can demand from a day-hike. However, as this route explores an unfrequented area of wilderness, it is important to be mindful of wildlife. Cougars, grizzlies, and wolves are common, so make plenty of noise as you trek and make sure at least one person in your party carries a can of bear spray. Note that there are trout in the lake, so assuming you have a valid license, why not bring your fishing rod?
Setting out from the trailhead, your journey up to Henry Lake follows the primitive trail southwardly into the woodlands. Minding your footing on the steep and rocky terrain, the Henry Lake Trail will direct you through a corridor of mixed trees. Don’t let the calve-burning climb discourage you—you are almost there. Gradually gaining a ridge, you will eventually crest the shoreline of Henry Lake.
Enjoy the tranquility and isolation of this stunning alpine lake and rejuvenate your tired feet in the chilly waters. Revel in the grandeur of Mount Henry looming above, then when you are ready, retrace your steps down the mountainside and back to your vehicle.
