Route Description for Callahan Creek and Historic Railway Trail
Immerse yourself in history and explore the great outdoors on the Callahan Creek and Historic Railway Hike. This fun family adventure travels along a trail that features interpretive signs detailing the area's history—including the ore and lumber mines, wonderful views of the fast-moving creek below, and a diversity of flora and fauna. Note that wildlife is common in the area, including cougars and bears, so make plenty of noise as you hike and consider bringing bear spray. Don’t forget to do a tick check after your adventure!
Setting out from the trailhead, the Callahan Creek and Historic Railway Hike follows the Callahan Historic Trail southwardly, traveling the same route as the historic railroad. The undulating path will lead you through the mixed woodlands carpeted with lush undergrowth. After some hiking, you will be rewarded with views of the narrow Callahan Creek Canyon below and sights of the nearby King and Pulpit Mountains. Take the time to read the interpretive signs as you wander and keep an eye out for historical artifacts that are scattered throughout the wilderness.
While you can turn around whenever you see fit, we continued to the trail’s end and then headed back, retracing our steps to the trailhead.
