The Stevens Lakes Trail is a great introduction to high-country hikes. This beautiful adventure demands the ascent of vertiginous terrain, creek fords, and the navigation of rockslides—but don’t worry, the payoff is well worth the sweat!

Route Description for Stevens Lakes Trail

Beckoning the exploration of thrill-seekers, the Stevens Lakes Trail boasts an exciting experience. While the terrain is technical in sections, the charm of the sequestered alpine lakes nestled amongst the craggy ridges adorned with lush conifers is unlike no other. Wear a sturdy pair of footwear and bring plenty of water to stay hydrated along the way. As this route explores the rugged and remote wilds, it is important to be mindful of wildlife! Make sure at least one person in your party knows the procedure in the instance of an unlikely encounter.

Those hiking the Stevens Lakes Trail will begin their adventure by wandering south along the Willow Creek Road. Soon after your departure, you will encounter an intersection, veer right, and you will be diverted onto the Stevens Lakes Trail. Don’t let the first few miles of relatively manageable terrain fool you; soon, the path will begin to more intensely climb, demanding careful footing and some scrambling. After some hiking, you will have to ford East Fork Willow Creek before reaching the shoreline of the perfectly circular Lower Stevens Lake.

Marvel at the picturesque alpine pool set in front of the craggy crests, then continue up to the smaller but arguably more scenic Upper Stevens Lake. Rest and rehydrate along the shoreline as you revel in the beauty of the high country. When you are ready, head back down the route the way you came, all the way to the trailhead.
