Table of contents

The hike from Phantom Ranch to Phantom Overlook is a fairly quick trip that won’t tire you out before your trek out of the canyon. If you’re staying at the ranch and want a relaxed side trip with a great view of the whole spot, this is a good pick. It goes without saying, but although this hike is easier and family-friendly, the hike into and out of the canyon is not, and you won’t be able to complete this route unless you’ve already found your way into the canyon. Expect light traffic.

Route Description for Phantom Overlook via Phantom Ranch

If you’ve found your way down to Phantom Ranch, the side trip to Phantom Overlook is a quick, enjoyable way to check out an up-high view of this oasis in the middle of the Grand Canyon. This hike is easy, short, and doesn’t require too much elevation gain.

From outside the Phantom Range Station near Bright Angel Creek, take North Kaibab Trail, keeping right near Bright Angel Lodge where the trails merge. Continue along the creek on North Kaibab Trail to a 3-way junction.

At the junction, take a sharp right to head uphill on a short but somewhat steep collection of switchbacks. The trail evens out a bit as you get closer to the viewpoint. Take in the view over Phantom Ranch and Bright Angel Creek, then look south to the Colorado River.

When you’ve enjoyed the view and are ready to return to the ranch, retrace your steps.
