Route Description for Hermit Camp to Monument Creek Camp via Tonto Trail
Travel from Hermit Camp to Monument Creek Camp via Tonto Trail to soak up those epic Grand Canyon views, backpack your way through the canyon, or to take a day hike from either campsite. This route is described as an out and back trail, but should you be backpacking and just need to go from one site to the other, halve the distance shown and plan accordingly.
Even though this section of the Tonto Trail isn’t too demanding, we still recommend preparing for the unique conditions of the Grand Canyon. Wear good boots and bring poles to help with steep and rocky sections, have lots of water on hand, and prepare for intense heat during the summer.
From Hermit Camp, stay right onto Tonto Trail. Keep left just before Cope Butte, which you’ll round the north side of. Look out to the river here before turning south. Keep right again to reach Monument Creek Camp, where you can either settle in or turn around to retrace your steps.
