Route Description for Wapiti Ridge
Hiking to Wapiti Ridge is a fun trek through the forest that will allow hikers to experience a nice mix of scenery in the Golden area. Before you set out on the trail, make sure to pack a trail map or GPS as the area is packed with intersecting hiking and mountain bike routes that can make navigating difficult if you are unfamiliar with the route. Additionally, bring bug spray. It will be your best friend as you hike past the lake and through the shady forest.
This trail follows a route that climbs gently uphill towards Wapiti Ridge and provides nice views overlooking the valley below. From the trailhead, you will almost immediately pass by the wooded shores of Sanders Lake on your right and can head out onto the wooden dock to get the best views over the water. Continuing along the route, you will take a course towards the southeast and up onto the ridge. Breaking out of the tree cover, you will have a sightline looking down on the rocky, eroding surface of the ridge and beyond to Kapristo Mountain to the southeast and Beaverhead Peak directly to the east. After taking in the valley views, head back along the same trail to return to your vehicle.
