Walking the John Musgrave Heritage Trail is a great excursion in Devon that is filled with natural beauty and interesting historical sites. Along the trail, you will cross the open countryside and pass through peaceful stretches of forest before arriving at the 16th Century site of Berry Pomeroy Castle. This is a fun day walk for those who enjoy blending history with nature.

Route Description for John Musgrave Heritage Trail

Popular with a variety of outdoor enthusiasts, the John Musgrave Heritage Trail is an awesome walking route through the Devon countryside that will see you become acquainted with interesting historical landmarks. Setting out from the car park at The Pig & Whistle, you will make your way east along Gatcombe Brook to cross over picturesque farm fields and traverse wonderfully scenic swathes of woodland terrain. Eventually, you will reach the loop portion of the walk that will lead you around the grounds and remaining buildings of the Berry Pomeroy Castle. There is also a cafe here to stop in for some mid-walk refreshments. After exploring the 16th Century castle, follow the same trail back across the countryside on the return to the car park.

To reach the trailhead for the John Musgrave Heritage Trail from Totnes, drive north along A381 for 1.6mi and turn left to enter the car park at The Pig & Whistle.
