Route Description for Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes Trail

The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes Trail is in the desert environment of Death Valley National Park, and so it is important that you prepare yourself for the arid conditions. Almost no shade exists throughout the duration of the route, and so we recommend wearing lots of sunscreen and a good hat to help protect you from the effects of the sun. We also recommend bringing lots of water with you!

A relatively leisurely route, the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes Trail is perfect for all skill levels and families with young children. The route is not only incredibly scenic, but also lots of fun! Traversing the large rolling sand dunes makes you feel as though you're on an alien planet, and is incredibly entertaining.

Having parked your vehicle, locate the trailhead at the northern section of the lot. The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes Trail itself is very straightforward. Simply follow the route north towards the sand dunes in the foreground. After gaining a small amount of elevation, the trail will end, and beautiful views of the surrounding area can be enjoyed. Once you have thoroughly enjoyed the views and had an opportunity to explore the dunes, backtrack your steps towards the trailhead.
