Route Description for Saddle Tor and Hound Tor Circular Walk
Walking the Saddle Tor and Hound Tor Circular Trail is a fairly rugged adventure in Dartmoor that will expose you to several different terrain types; however, these are still more than manageable for most walkers and make for an interesting afternoon on the trails. Just be sure to wear sturdy walking boots and you will be fine. Setting out from the car park, you will follow the trail to the northeast to traverse Saddle Tor and the rocky summit of Haytor, before passing by the scenic Haytor Quarry that was mined in the 19th and early 20th centuries. From here, the trail will turn to the northwest and descend the hillside before climbing back uphill through a village that was likely abandoned in the 15th Century. A short push further uphill will bring you to the summit of Hound Tor, where you will enjoy sweeping views across Dartmoor National Park. After taking in the views, head south across the undulating landscape on the return leg of the journey back to the car park.
