Route Description for Hembury Woods Walk
The Hembury Woods Walk is a nice and easy adventure that can be enjoyed by walkers of all skill levels, including families with children, although those with pushcarts won’t fare nearly as well on the unsurfaced pathways. Be sure to wear good walking boots to better traverse the terrain in the area and prepare for wet/muddy conditions if you are walking in the winter or spring, particularly in the parts along the river.
Setting out from the car park, you will make your way through the forest to the north, where you will meet up with the banks of the River Dart. From here, you will head to the northeast along the water’s edge, following the trail between the base of the hill and your left and the water on your right as you enjoy the peaceful riverside setting. Eventually, you will turn to the west and climb your way up the hillside, working around the site of Hemsbury Castle, an Iron Age hillfort overlooking the surrounding area. After a quick jaunt along the road, you will descend the hillside and follow the trail as it bends to the south and runs along Holy Brook on the return to the car park where you began your adventure.
