The South West Coast Path: Fowey to Downderry is a beautifully scenic, but long and challenging walk along the gorgeous coast of Cornwall. While out on the trail, you will climb uphill and traverse the rugged coastal terrain, passing through charming villages as you enjoy stunning views that sweep across the English Channel. This route will take a fair amount of physical fitness to complete in one day; however, the beautiful views and sense of achievement are incomparable.

Route Description for South West Coast Path: Fowey to Downderry

While the South West Coast Path: Fowey to Downderry isn’t really all that challenging in terms of terrain, the overall distance and elevation gain throughout the route are what adds to its difficulty. If you are looking to experience the natural beauty of the Cornish coast and don’t mind exhausting yourself in the process, then this will be the perfect trail for you.

After taking the ferry to Polruan from Fowey, you will set out on the trail and make your way through the village to reach the coast. From here, you will traverse the rugged coastal terrain, making your way around the picturesque National Trust Site of Lantic Bay before passing by a number of scenic coves and beaches. Take some time to appreciate the stunning views of the English Channel that spreads out before you and stands in contrast to the rough and jagged surface of the cliffs.

After passing through Polperro and Talland, you will round Portnadler Bay on the way into Looe. Once you have crossed over the East Looe River, you will climb back uphill along the water’s edge before descending once again to cross over the River Seaton. Keep on to the east, making your way past seaton beach to eventually reach the endpoint of the walk at Downderry.

To get to the South West Coast Path: Fowey to Downderry trailhead from Fowey, you will need to head past Whitehouse Quay to reach the Fowey landing. From here, you will take the ferry over to Polruan to access the starting point of the walk.
