Route Description for Three Peaks Loop
Traveling along some of the most picturesque trails in the area, the Three Peaks Loop reveals the best of the best when it comes to scenery. From the floor of the North Cheyenne Canyon and up to vaulted peaks, there is no beating the views! This trek is longer and more strenuous than most hikes in the area, so make sure you are well prepared with sturdy footwear, layers, a bear bell, and plenty of water! Note that sections of the route are unmarked and primitive, and though manageable without, we highly suggest using the trail GPS!
Departing from the Gold Camp Trailhead, the Three Peaks Loop heads west along the Gold Camp Road, past a metal gate, and onto the Seven Bridges Trail. Hike through the steep-walled corridor, over seven bridges above the North Cheyenne Creek. Eventually, you will reach an intersection, keep right here, and you will be diverted onto the North Seven Bridges Spur Trail. Off this path is an unmarked, more primitive trail up to the summit of Kineo Mountain. Follow the route east up to the rocky peak and revel in the expansive views. Retrace your footing back down the path when you are ready, hiking north along the North Seven Bridges Spur Trail. At the next junction, veer right onto the Jones Park 701 Trail heading east.
Follow this route, and you will soon merge onto Captain Jack’s Trail. Off this path, there will be another unmarked trail up to the summit of Mount Buckhorn. Head north along the primitive route and admire the foothills from the peak. Retrace your footing back down the path, continuing to track east along the Captain Jack’s Trail. Eventually, you will meet an intersection with the Mays Peak Trail. Wander along this route to your third summit, then take the High Drive Trail back to the trailhead.
