Route Description for Elephant Hill and Chesler Park Loop
The Elephant Hill and Chesler Park Loop is a fantastic tour of the Needles District in Canyonlands National Park. This trail travels over varied terrain with lots of ups and downs; bringing hiking poles can be a great way to help with stability along this trail and save your knees some strain. Don’t forget to bring a good sunhat, lots of water, and tasty snacks along with you; this trail really heats up in the afternoon sun. You will also want to bring along a camera; the views along this trail are absolutely stunning.
From the Elephant Hill trailhead, follow the path south to a divide. Take a right at this junction and hike the short distance to the Elephant Canyon Campsite #1. This campsite marks the beginning and end of the loop section. Carry on straight ahead to follow the loop counterclockwise. Stay left at all the subsequent divides until you find yourself back at the campsite.
When you meet up with the trail at Elephant Canyon Campsite 1, simply retrace the main path back out to the trailhead.
Getting to the Elephant Hill and Chesler Park Loop Trailhead
From the Needles Visitor Center, follow Needles Main Park Road for 2.8mi before taking a left onto Elephant Hill Road. Continue on Elephant Hill Road for 3.3mi to the Elephant Hill Trailhead.Route Information
